Following the January 6 Capitol Insurrection, I wrote a 12-page memo regarding the need to address rightwing extremism in the Minnesota National Guard (MNARNG). I submitted it to my chain of command and the MNNARNG’s Joint Force Headquarters. In the interest of publicizing this issue (and after being told that my memo would likely “end up in the trash”), I shared it with local media. At the time, I did not share my memo with a public audience, but in light of a forthcoming article for MinnPost regarding the MNARNG’s continued failure to take seriously the problem of extremism, I am making it available here as a .pdf:
This is the media I spoke to following the submission of my memo:
- “Soldier Appeals to Minnesota Guard to Take Stronger Stand Against Rioters,” Star Tribune, January 14, 2021.
- “Minnesota National Guard Soldier Criticizes Leadership on Public Response to Capitol Riot,” FOX 9, January 14, 2021.
- “Joshua Preston on His Memo to the National Guard,” The Chad Hartman Show, January 15, 2021.
